Kia orana Whaanau
Epetoma o te reo Māori Kūki ‘Āirani – welcome to Cook Island Language Week. The theme for 2026 is Me kite koe i te tuatua i to’ou reo tupuna, e turanga rangatira tena nō’ou no te uki amuri atu” – With our language as our foundation, we will embrace the future. This week in our classrooms our kaiako have planned some Cook Island Language learning activities for all our tamariki. If you check out the numbers above you will notice they are quite similar to NZ Maaori.
What a great turnout we had for our Kapa Haka, Kai and Korero, Maaori Whaanau consultation last week-it was lovely to see you all. We had about 150 whaanau join us on the night and our Kapa Haka performed beautifully. A special thanks to Whaea Lisa and Whaea Justine who cooked up our boil up – you could smell the scrummy kai cooking all over the school. Thanks also to Whaea Marama and Miss Ansin for supporting our Kapa Haka tamariki. We are excited to announce that this September, our Middle School tamariki are going to be putting on a performance of Disney’s Moana Jr.
Last term, our classes had the chance to work on their dramatic skills, supported by the wonderful Pform. Auditions were held and key character roles were given out, to much excitement! Alongside these key roles, all middle school classes will play a part in the performance.
Performance Dates: Tuesday 15, Wednesday 16 and Thursday 17 September @5:30pm plus a matinee on Thursday @11am
Location: Waterlea School Hall

We are looking for additional whaanau support to make this a success both in the lead up to and during the performances. If you are interested in helping, please email andy.jones@waterlea.school.nz so we can add your name to the list!

Book week for Waterlea will be next week – 10th to 14th August and we have an action packed week of celebrating books and reading across the school. The week ends with a ‘dress up as your favourite book character’ parade at the MANA Assembly on Friday 14 August.
In the run up to Book week the Library is inviting you to have a go at our Bookface challenge. See the poster below for details.

Our attendance rate as a school for the third week for Term 3 is at 94% .
As always, please remember to let the office know if your child is going to be away and the reason for the absence. This information will allow us to enter the correct attendance code for your child. You can phone the office on 096364233 or email reception@waterlea.school.nz.
If your child is going away during the school term please email principal@waterlea.school.nz with the details for the absence and the dates your child will be away.

Year 4 Writers- London, Priya, Eden and Evelyn

We have some budding writers in our Year 4 team who have been involved in some creative workshops with Whaea Kezia. We will feature some of these writers over the next few weeks so their writing reaches a wider audience. Some of the writing features they have been exploring are repetition for impact in poetic writing, and organising ideas that are connected, into paragraphs.
